The tough way down to Emerald Lakes.
The stunning Emerald Lakes. See the scale by finding the people bottom left. Amazing, just amazing.
Red Crater, an awesome sight. And for Bibi it was literally jaw-dropping :)
Bibi trying her best to climb this steep section.
This section was quite odd. Completely flat, almost Mars-like. In tomorrow’s photo you can see this road from higher ground.
Almost at the end of the first section. Still a long way to go!
The Tongariro Crossing is one of the most famous one-day-hikes in New Zealand. It is a little less than 20km and quite steep here and there. But absolutely stunning, as you will see the coming days!
Bibi being a daredevil :)
In the distance you can see the steam filled Te Maari Crater. During the Tongariro Crossing we would have a better look at it.

Our cool little campervan, rented at Escape Campervans.
After spending a day or two in Auckland, we hit the road to Tongariro National Park. Here we had our first view of Mount Ngauruhoe, aka Mount Doom in Lord of the Rings. The day after this we would hike the Tongariro Crossing. A stunning 20km hike. More on that later.
